As a proud ambassador of Belgium, Brussels Airlines unveiled the fifth special livery aircraft as part of its Belgian Icons series dedicated to famous Belgian characters and events earlier this year. The latest is Aerosmurf, inspired by the lovable blue characters, the Smurfs. A worldwide contest for a design idea was held last year, and the winner was picked by public vote after a jury of famous Belgians had whittled the over 1,400 entries down to two. In addition to the unique design of 19 Smurfs on the side of the A320 aircraft, there are also Smurf footsteps on the carpet inside as well as a special design on the underbelly of the aircraft, visible from the ground only upon take-off and landing. Aerosmurf flies to destinations on the carrier’s European network, including to London, Geneva, Rome, Faro and Moscow.
